What Research Says About CBD for Anxiety
A study was published in January 2019 by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and found:
- Anxiety levels dropped in about 79% of patients after using CBD for a month
- Anxiety remained at lower levels throughout the study
- Few notable side-effects reported
- CBD better tolerated than anti-anxiety medications
- CBD treatment produced “clinically significant” anxiety relief
- Patients experienced no altered consciousness or “high”
Fewer side effects means a huge win for CBD, because traditional anti-anxiety medications come with a truckload of them. But adding CBD to your anxiety treatment plan doesn’t mean you can or should stop other medications.
In this study, patients continued taking psychiatric medications and some were also receiving mental health services. However, significant improvement in anxiety levels began after introducing CBD as part of the treatment. Additionally, all patients in the study were diagnosed by a psychiatrist, which typically suggests more severe symptoms. This makes symptom-relief even more promising if you suffer from mild to moderate anxiety.

What Research Says About CBD for PTSD
In April 2019, an 8-week study on CBD and the treatment of PTSD reports reduced symptoms in 91% of participants. Moreover, those patients with frequent PTSD-related nightmares reported having fewer nightmares while taking CBD.
As in the previous study, these patients continued psychiatric care and prescription medications while participating, but significant improvement occurred after adding CBD to the treatment plan.

- Doses used were lower than in other research
- Patients reported greater symptom improvement with higher doses
- Patients received liquid spray and capsule forms of CBD
- Study shows a sustained decrease in symptoms
Nearly 8 million adults in the U.S. suffer from PTSD and the condition can last months or even years. It’s a severe type of anxiety that typically develops after a traumatic event, like rape, abuse, war, mass violence (terrorist attack), or a natural disaster.
Interestingly, experts say that women are far more susceptible to PTSD than men, and about 1 in 10 women will develop this condition at some point in her lifetime.
While research results on using CBD for anxiety are very promising, more controlled, clinical trials are needed for conclusive results.
How to Take CBD for Anxiety
